How to Choose the Right Caregiver/Dispensary
January 26th, 2012 // 3:41 am @ Herb Diesel // No Comments
Becoming a new patient can be intimidating for some people. Not only are you bombarded with a ton of new rules and guidelines that go along with your new red card, but every dispensary you visit is trying to convince you that they are “The Best in Town” and that you should sign your caregiver rights over to them.
Don’t jump on the bandwagon too soon, you don’t want to get stuck with a dispensary that had a nice sign-up bonus but then you quickly realize they don’t have anything else to offer except inflated prices. This blog post was created to guide you to the dispensary that is right for you.
Dispensary Membership Perks
Every dispensary will offer it’s members perks because with your caregiver rights they are able to grow more plants among other things. Here is a list of the most common specials and membership perks you will find at medical marijuana centers. Many dispensaries will just have one or two types of membership perks so pay attention to which perks are most important to you and your medical and financial situation.
Membership Sign-up Bonus:
When you sign a dispensary up as your caregiver there is often a special bonus gift. At Alameda Wellness Center we give our new members a choice between two offers. The first choice is half of an 1/8th of any strain for free and the second offer is a free 1/2 oz of our premium shake a $40 value. One time bonus but once you get it, that’s it.
Daily Specials:
If you visit the dispensary on a specific day of the week you can get reduced prices on product or for next to free. Alameda Wellness offers member only specials on Monday and Wednesday. Monday members receive a gram for only a nickel and on Wednesday a pre-rolled joint for a nickel. If you show up every Monday and Wednesday you will get about 4 grams of bud and 4 joints a month for only 40 cents. There are also specials on other days of the week and they are available to non-members as well.
Reduced Cost for Members:
Some dispensaries have flat prices across the board to keep things simple and others have the prices that vary so they can offer lower prices to both members and non members. One of the most common forms of reduced member cost is when a dispensary reduces their flat price of $45 per 1/8th down to $35 for members. Another common member discount is to give members a specific percentage off their final total. This works better in situations when the dispensary’s regular prices vary greatly. This percentage off has been spotted at around 20% in some dispensaries. Reduced cost is one of the best ways to save money over a long period of time.
Dispensary Atmosphere
Many patients would think about the atmosphere of the dispensary above all else when choosing which dispensary to give their caregiver rights. After all you want to feel relaxed and at home when you are buying your meds, especially when you are new to the whole medical marijuana scene.
Product Quality and Selection
Medical marijuana quality can vary greatly from dispensary to dispensary. If you are a new patient you should definitely visit several dispensaries and observe their quality and selection closely before settling on the medical marijuana center with the best deals and discounts. Even though a dispensary has affordable products, it doesn’t necessarily mean that is medical quality or worth your membership rights. On the bright side, most dispensaries will give you full advantage of the member perks if you are a first time visitor to their dispensary. Take advantage of this early!
Non-Member Discounts
If you are looking for a dispensary to sign your caregiver rights to, why should I concern myself with their non member discounts, especially if they have great member discounts? Once you become a member of the dispensary you may no longer be eligible for some of their other coupons and specials, so you need to pay attention to the fine print on coupons and promotions. Most non-member discounts are also available to members, so they may be another way for you to save whether you do or don’t give them your caregiver rights. These coupons and discounts are most commonly found in the dispensary newsletter, twitter, facebook, newspapers and magazines.
How to Designate a New Caregiver/Dispensary
If you already have your red card but have not designated a primary caregiver or want to change your primary caregiver, you must submit a Change of Patient Records Form to the Health Department’s Medical Marijuana Registry. Most dispensaries will be eager to help you fill out the necessary paperwork. The appropriate form can be printed off here: Change of Patient Records Form (Correct form as of December 2011)

The Real Difference Between THC, CBD and CBN
January 12th, 2012 // 7:06 am @ Herb Diesel // No Comments
Surely all medical marijuana patients have heard of THC and nearly all can tell you about its effects. Did you know that THC isn’t the only useful cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. In fact, there are many many others but the 3 most important to medical marijuana patients are THC, CBD and CBN. In this article we will go into detail on how each offers its own unique properties and effects.
THC (Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol)
- THC is a well known psychoactive cannabinoid and is responsible for the majority of the effects that you get from marijuana consumption. Ultimately THC is what gets you “High.”
- The more THC you consume the stronger effects you will get.
- THC mostly has a wide range of cerebral effects, which can make you feel happy, euphoric, energetic, anxious, paranoid or even nervous.
- Medicinally THC has been shown to have anti-depressant effects and even relieves pain and insomnia. It also induces relaxation and stimulates the appetite, which has shown to be useful with cancer and anorexia patients.
- Most cured cannabis buds you buy at dispensaries range from 12%-21% THC content and if grown properly can reach even higher levels.
- WARNING! Patients with high anxiety or those who suffer from schizophrenia should avoid strains with extremely high levels of THC.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
- CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, which is known for changing the effects of consumed THC.
- CBD increases the happy, euphoric and cerebral effects of THC while decreasing paranoia, anxiety and nervousness.
- This cannabinoid is almost always in much lower concentrations than THC in most cannabis plants, usually less than 1%. In rare strains CBD concentrations can outweigh THC levels.
- Medicinally CBD has been shown to relieve anxiety, pain, muscle spasms, inflammation and convulsions. So it is great for patients with MS, fibromyalgia and epilepsy.
- During a study when CBD was combined with THC and injected into breast and brain tumors, it was shown to inhibit cancer cell growth.
CBN (Cannabinol)
- CBN is a psychoactive cannabinoid, but is only 10% of the strength of THC.
- The effects of CBN have shown to make you feel more dizzy, groggy, disoriented and has also been shown to lower your heart rate.
- CBN is essentially THC that has been partially broken down either by oxidization while in storage, during the curing process, in a concentration process or even when your body metabolizes recently consumed THC.
- Increased amounts of CBN has been associated with increased “bad feelings” like anxiety, paranoia and nervousness.
- High amounts of CBN can be avoided with proper curing and storing of dried cannabis in a cool, dry area inside an airtight container.
What does all of this mean for medical marijuana patients?
With lab testing, Alameda Wellness is beginning to test and display the percentages of these cannabinoids from our own medical marijuana strains. Now that you know that the effects you feel from your medicinal marijuana goes much deeper than whether it is a Indica or a Sativa, here are a few pointers to help you figure out which types of strains are right for you in regards to THC and CBD.
- High THC and High CBD levels together will give you a very strong mental high while making your body feel relaxed and heavy.
- High THC and Low CBD levels will give you a strong cerebral high while your body becomes more energetic.
- Low THC and High CBD levels makes your body very relaxed and dulls your mind. Couch-lock anyone? You shouldn’t feel as “high” when compared to strains with higher THC levels.
Please note that the author of this article is not a doctor. You should only consume medical marijuana with the recommendation of your doctor.

MMJ Movement “Colorado”
July 20th, 2010 // 11:02 pm @ admin // No Comments
Be an ambassador; let your voice be heard to your local and state representatives. The time is here and now a Marijuana Prohibition. Please don’t let the Alcohol, Tobacco or large Pharmaceutical Companies take away our rights.
If we don’t keep pushing and don’t keep demanding that our constitutional rights be protected under Colorado law, we will no longer be the leading force of the Marijuana movement here in this country. Sure California had started the movement many years prior to Colorado but their local officials have jurisdiction over the laws and how it all washes out at the end of the day. We as Coloradoans have the ability to have our voice heard loud and proud as we the voters elected for Medical Marijuana to be legal.
CONTACT YOU LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES TODAY AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD! ! !
How do you think Prohibition was accomplished? Voice of the people – be heard!

Colorado Senate Bill – SB 109
July 20th, 2010 // 10:56 pm @ admin // No Comments
Senate Bill passed February 1, 2010
A bill that prevents all recreational pot users from skirting the law to obtain medical marijuana.
The Senate voted 34-1 back in February.
It naturally bars doctors from writing recommendations inside dispensaries that sell medical marijuana. It requires that doctors review a person’s medical history and give them a full examination previous to recommending that they become a legal user of medical marijuana.
Those between the ages of 18 and 21 would have to get the approval of two doctors, which is already required for patients under 18.

Our Neighborhood
April 28th, 2010 // 6:52 pm @ admin // No Comments
March 24, 2010
Doug Pimple, Assistant Editor, Baker Historic Neighborhood Association
Thank you for the opportunity to comment and give feedback to the neighborhood regarding our business venture and our responsibility as a “good neighbor.” First off in regards to Ms. Boigon’s first concern,
Medical marijuana dispensaries are attractive targets for burglars, robbers and other criminals due to the fact that they sell products of high value that are portable and due to the likelihood that dispensaries will have large amounts of cash on their premises.
Although there is some truth to this statement lets look at the facts. There were 35 Bank robberies in the Denver Metro area just in December alone, while there were only 7 Medical Marijuana Dispensary robberies. However, what we found in daily news was all MMD related. Bizarre? No, it was a hot topic over the holiday season. Have we heard about additional robberies since then, no we have not. We believe the business owners who have gotten serious about security are one of the reasons for that.
Jewelry stores, pawn shops, and banks have products of high value as well as large quantities of cash on premises. Security is an important component for all of these businesses and I feel we are in that category. Thousands of dollars have gone into our security system to ensure safety of both patients and employees of the Dispensary. All employees must wear security fauves when working and an emergency signal can be sent directly to the Police Department in the event we need help. We provide additional security to the neighborhood with our exterior cameras and just like any neighborhood, having all eyes open helps.
Additionally, we recognize this elevated risk of responsibility and work very hard to limit product or cash on the premises. As we have established relationships with our Growers/Vendors and do not purchase product from anyone right off of the street.
Ms. Boigon’s second concern,
Medical marijuana dispensaries provide products that are attractive to children because they can be packaged as regular food treats, and may contain substances that could be harmful to them.
These items are known as edibles and many patients need them to medicate properly. There are a lot of patients who choose not to smoke and these products are an important part of their pain management routine. Also many patients are seeking an alternative to pharmaceutical medications and all the side effects that go along with them so this is a viable alternative for many.
Locking up the liquor cabinet and the gun closet is responsible parenting. Ultimately, it is the sole responsibility of the “parents” or “legal guardians” to keep anything that could potentially harm a child out of reach. It’s illegal to sell these items to minors and we would never jeopardize our business by doing so.
Thanks again for our input we appreciate being a part of this neighborhood. My partner and I have been business owners in Denver for many years and believe a great deal in community as this is our home.
Thank you,
Rodney E. Hurlbut
Co-Owner, Alameda Wellness Center

HB1284 & SB109
April 24th, 2010 // 8:14 pm @ admin // No Comments
Ritter Signed the HB1284 and SB109 Monday, June 7th.
Thus, many new regulations for Dispensary Owners, now “Medical Marijuana Centers” and Grow Operation Owners. Seemingly, many SHOTGUN weddings between these two will be occurring prior to July 1, 2010.
Although, the full bill doesn’t go into effect until July 1, 2011. State and City regulations are asked to be followed in the next few weeks. In addition to, coming up with thousands of dollars in new application/annual fees.
Now Colorado is on the front of leading the Medical Marijuana movement, as California is falling behind. Colorado has set the precedence for many other states to follow.
